How to Overcome Job Search Depression to Move Your Career Forward

Overcoming job hunting depression is not always the easiest thing to do, but with a positive, determined, and persistent attitude, you should be able to turn it around.

The greatest part about life is its uncertainty and the fact that it’s full of surprises. Throughout the time you spend hunting for a new job, hang in there when life throws you a curveball to overcome the job search blues.

Take Life in Stride

Uncertainty can negatively affect our lives—we get unwanted surprises that throw us for a loop. Life is full of twists and turns, and even if we experience a turn that we didn’t expect—or didn’t necessarily want—we need to learn to take them in stride.

For instance, if you have recently found yourself unemployed, it can be scary. You might have expected to be with the company for the duration of your career, or maybe you didn’t really like your job but thought you would leave on your own terms. When life gives you lemons, it’s usually just that our expectations aren’t fulfilled or don’t live up to reality —as the saying goes, turn lemons into lemonade.

When You’re Unemployed

So maybe you have found yourself unemployed. There is never a good time to be unemployed; however, it’s best to look at your newfound unemployment as an opportunity. Maybe you never really enjoyed your job, or perhaps you were stuck in a dead-end situation. Unemployment now allows you to go after a job you’ll love. You now have the ability to find out what you really want to do with your life. You might even want to go back to school and pursue a career change.

So even though this curveball might have you feeling like you are not in control of your life at the moment, take the wheel and get your car back on course. Life is full of surprises, some good and some not so good. And even though this may not seem like a good surprise, take the optimistic route and try to turn it into a positive experience. Take this opportunity to find a job that you enjoy. Find a job that is a better fit for you. Take your curveball and hit a home run.

Find the Silver Lining

Begin with an exciting job search plan that has you exploring new avenues and developing new skills. Life is full of surprises; we all have to learn to take things in stride and go with the flow.
