If you’re looking for a bit of an adventure, why not consider working abroad? Working abroad can be a great life experience.
Many professionals and recent graduates decide to work overseas. This can be a great way to give back to a developing community, an opportunity to save a little extra cash, or an exciting way to see the world. Working overseas is both a fun and challenging experience with plenty of opportunities to travel and immerse yourself in new environments and cultures.
Options to Work Abroad
There are many opportunities overseas for accredited job seekers. One option when working abroad is to work at an international company. There are many different types of international companies that you can choose from. Also, these may provide less culture shock than immersing yourself in a local business.
Qualifications Needed
To work at an international company, you will need to be a qualified professional. Normally you will be required to hold a Bachelor’s Degree to qualify for a working visa. This will change depending on the country you are trying to work in; however, working visas and government guidelines for employee qualifications change depending on the specific country.
Learn a Bit of the Language
Usually, a little knowledge of the native language will be necessary to work in other countries. However, you may feel more comfortable moving to a foreign country with a grasp of their language. Even if you enter the country not knowing any of the languages, you will pick up a fair amount during your stay. It is, therefore, a great way to learn a new language. Learning the native tongue will also help you get along in a foreign country during your day-to-day living.
How to Prepare for an International Job Interview
There is a lot you can do in preparation for meeting with overseas recruiters. This preparation will help you to feel more secure when the time comes.
Below are some things you should do to prepare successfully for an important interview with recruiters:
Appearance at the Interview
This may sound cliché, but your appearance is important for your first impression with recruiters. Recruiters have traveled a long way to find good quality talent, so you want to convey to them that you are just that. Regardless of gender, if you don’t own a suit, you should go out and buy one. If you can’t afford one, opt for clothing that will accentuate your professional image. Remember that it’s better to be overdressed than under-dressed.
What to Bring to the Meeting
You should take a hard copy of your application package, without the cover letter, with you to the interview. Even though your recruiter will likely have one with them, it’s best to be prepared. Prepare a portfolio with original certificates and reference letters. Many recruiters will want to see your original documents during the interview. If you’ve put together a portfolio, bring it to the interview.
Pre-Interview Preparation
It’s also a great idea to prepare yourself with a mock interview to practice. Try and think of all the questions you’ve ever been asked in a job interview and make a list. Once you have that list, prepare simple answers so they not be caught unaware. Once you’ve prepared your answers, sit down with someone and practice answering them.
If there’s anything in your experience or qualifications you think may work against you, think about ways to address it in the interview. You might be asked questions about what you’ve included in your resume, so be prepared with solid responses.
