How to Showcase Your Employability Skills

Before submitting your resume in response to a job opening, you should take the time to carefully read through the job description so that you know how to showcase your employability skills.

Usually, employers are very clear about what they are looking for.  You should, therefore, be able to describe yourself in such a way that they will feel obligated to hire you.

After reading the job description, you should take a good look at your resume. Are there changes you can make to increase your chances of getting the job?  Look at the requirements listed in the job description and match your skills and abilities to it.

The more of the employer’s requirements that you can fulfill, the better your chances are of getting hired.

Some employers aren’t always specific about what they are seeking. When that happens, you will have to use your common sense to what you think will be needed for the position. If you are qualified for the job, you should figure out what they are looking for. A phone call to the employer asking specific questions on what they require may help also.

Professional Profile

Your professional profile is the place where you get the opportunity to really sell yourself. You want to use your profile to show the employer that you have what it takes for the position. When you are writing your professional profile, write to the best of your ability, and don’t include any personal information at this time.

Writing a Career Objective

One of the most important parts of your resume is your career objective. Your career objective is your professional goal. This is something the employer may talk about when at your interview. When you are writing your career objective, be specific and avoid making generic statements. After reading your career objective, the employer should have a clear idea of your employment goals.

List Your Employability Skills

There are some basic employability skills that most employers are looking for. Employability skills can be divided into eight different categories. These categories are teamwork, initiative, enterprise, self-management, technology, communication, problem-solving, planning, organizing, and learning. List these skills on your resume.

How to List Your Employability Skills

The best way to let a potential employer know you have the skills and track record they are looking for in a new employee is to include a list of your experiences on your resume. This is an excellent way to show that you know how to be a team player and that you can meet a deadline. List any noted achievements you have within a company, anything that highlights accomplishments that the company noticed.

The Cover Letter

Another great way to provide a prospective employer with knowledge of your employability skills is in your cover letter. This is an excellent way to show an employer what kind of employee you are. The way to do this is by mentioning organizations that you have been involved with, what you learned from your past experiences, and how you’ve enjoyed your career.

When you are writing a cover letter, make sure that you sound enthusiastic about the position you are applying for. State your career objective (the job you wish to secure), motivation, and credibility. Communicate to your prospective employer you will be an asset to their organization.
